Public Engagement

GSU Postdoctoral Association (PDA) Co-Chair
2023-present

It’s been really great to serve as an officer for the PDA since 2023. We are a postdoc-led volunteer organization and have been working to enhance the postdoctoral experience by facilitating social and career connections. Our yearly symposium features postdoctoral researchers from across GSU and has done a lot to increase visibility within the university.

Story Collider
2023

I was so excited to work with the fantastic Atlanta branch of the Story Collider team. I was one of four storytellers to speak at the live event at Waller’s Coffee Shop in September 2023. Big thanks to Allison Carter for providing beautiful photos of the event!

Beyond The Ivory Tower
2023

It was an absolute pleasure to be selected as a participant for the Beyond The Ivory Tower writing workshop in June of 2023. The workshop was led by The New York Times editor James Ryerson, and provided a collaborative environment for attendees to improve their skills to better communicate science to a broader audience. It’s been wonderful to be a part of the alumni community with fabulous support from Joseph Fridman.

Adopt-a-Creek
2016-2021

Creek_CFCreek_Becca2 copy

To help Keep Austin Beautiful, I adopted a 1/4 mile segment of creek along the JJ Seabrook Greenbelt with the Hofmann Lab for the next two years. Four times a year, we will have clean ups and restoration projects to reduce the amount of trash entering the creek, improve water quality, and restore habitats along the waterway.

UT Austin Research Internship Program
2015-2019

I have been fortunate enough to participate as a high school student mentor for two consecutive years. I’ve helped students design and execute experiments, and am always excited to contribute and learn from their final presentations summarizing the results of their hard work.

Science Under the Stars
2014, 2017 to present

Science Under the Stars is a free, public outreach lecture series that is led by graduate students at UT Austin. I’ve been very lucky to help out with this great program for two years.

GK-12 Associates Program
2014

I was fortunate to serve as a volunteer for the GK-12 program at UT Austin that facilitates communication between university researchers and K-12 teachers and students.
